Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) to Sønderborg Airport

Sønderborg Airport is ambitious about growing their business and number of passengers, and they have the financial backbone to realize these ambitions. Next to growing the business, there is also a vision about becoming the world’s most sustainable regional airport and being one of frontrunners in executing a green agenda.

As CCO, you are offered a unique opportunity to join (almost) from the beginning and head the commercialization of a regional airport. To support you, you will have an engaged Board of Directors including aviation professionals as well as an airport organization that is ready to operationalize your commercial strategies. Additionally, you will be part of an overall plan that includes several initiatives for investments in physical infrastructure as well as development of the whole region.

In the role, you will report to the Airport Director and the Board of Directors, with whom you will closely collaborate and interact. There will be a lot of indirect management, where you will set a direction and head the execution through organizational resources and external advisors. In the future, you will along with the commercial development, build a commercial team.

Workplace will be in Sønderborg Airport, and if you are not located in the region, you are hopefully open about relocating, which the airport will support you in. As an alternative and as a less preferred solution, you can commute to Sønderborg Airport on a regularly basis.

Growth strategy and ambitious about making a difference

Sønderborg Airport is owned by Bitten & Mads Clausen’s Foundation (BMC) and Sønderborg Municipality and is part of a general masterplan for the region that includes other infrastructure development activities such as the harbor, Hotel Alsik, Southern University of Denmark, an adventure park, and much more – and everything is aimed at building a thriving and prosperous region, where companies and people want to come, live, and work. Next to this, Sønderborg is ambitious about being a role model for green energy solutions, and in the last years, Sønderborg has developed from having a classical local focus to becoming an internationally oriented, thriving and innovative municipality.

Sales Executive in Route Development with an entrepreneurial mindset and ambitions

In the role as CCO, you will be overall responsible for defining and heading the airport’s future commercial strategic development and execution. This includes growing the Route Development, Charter, and General Aviation business, focusing on both developing existing route and charter traffic and attracting new traffic. There will be a natural evolvement in the execution of the various plans for the airport, where you will first center your attention on developing new routes and airlines as well as attracting real estate customers. Next, your attention will also be on attracting cargo customers, where belly cargo will be available.

You will not only execute an ambitious strategy, you will also have a strong influence on setting the right commercial strategies and pace as well as have an overview on what investments you will need to be successful. Some of your responsibilities will include – not necessarily at first – but in the future, when the puzzle slowly but surely is being solved:

  • Develop existing route and charter traffic and attracting new traffic by being in close dialogue with new and existing customers.
  • Define and execute a sales strategy including channel strategies and account plans based on the overall growth strategy and prioritizations.
  • Develop sales material and value propositions, with assistance from marketing agencies, and provide input in which networks the airport should be marketed to reach the target groups.
  • Establish the platform and define the objectives on how to optimize and develop new business with real estate customers to secure and increase revenue and to realize the ambition about an Airport Village targeted for airlines, companies related to aviation, cargo, and logistics.
  • Work across different internal departments to ensure adaptation to security and safety, and aviation traffic planning.
  • Quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors and provide advisory on what business development initiatives they should prioritize.

A seasoned Sales Executive with strong network and outset in the Aviation industry

We expect you to be a seasoned specialist in Route Development and General Aviation, with a genuine interest in setting a direction and motivating others to support and collaborate to achieve a common goal. As a person, you are extrovert, communicative, and convincing, with focus on building, maintaining, and developing relations within an organization, and to stakeholders and customers. You have an agile and an entrepreneurial mindset, combined with a strong process flair that helps in defining and building concepts and standards. In your work, you balance a strategic understanding with a passion for “being out there” and selling-in solutions.

Professionally, you have experience from developing airports commercially, and you have an established network among airlines, especially regarding route development and charter, and potentially also developing real estate and cargo sales. Most importantly, you have a strong passion for aviation. Other skills include:

  • Fluency in English, maybe combined with knowledge of Danish and/or German.
  • Relevant academic credentials that have provided analytical and methodological skills.
  • If not living in Southern Jutland, you are flexible in relocating or commuting to the region on a regularly basis.
  • Analytical skills, and experience in working with and analyzing complex data from various data sources.
  • Experience from an international context and a cultural empathy.
