Senior Principal Scientist to Topsoe

As part of a centrally placed unit in Topsoe, do you want to influence new product and process design and scale-up, where you will act as link between Development and Manufacturing? In this role, you will be essential in securing current and future product launches that make a true difference in technology that secure Sustainability across various industries. With your background in Chemistry and Production Processes and Production Technologies, you will take lead in exciting projects that can help prevent environmental issues.

The role as Senior Principal Scientist is part of Scale-up and Manufacturing Development (SMD) that is part of Clean Fuel & Chemical Catalysts in Research & Development (R&D), which plays a key part in securing Topsoe’s continuous growth and positioning. Topsoe yearly directs more than 12% of revenue to R&D. SMD represents a Center of Excellence within catalyst scale up. SMD is responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of the manufacturing development pilots, and the bench-scale facilities.

More specifically, SMD provides project management, engineering, and preparatory resources for R&D catalyst development projects as well as advisory and subject matter expertise to the Global Supply organization. This new role will report to the R&D Director in SMD and primarily works out of Lyngby, and with touching points in the manufacturing facilities in Ravnholm and Frederikssund

The Job

In the job as Senior Principal Scientist, you will be important in maintaining Topsoe’s ability to manufacture their present and future catalysts in the most optimal way through early-phase scoping, world class production scale up and efficient new product launches. You will be project lead and ensure advisory on how to tailor and set up optimal processes and draws in subject matter experts when needed. Some of your specific tasks will be to lead:

  • early concept clarification and concept development for new products in or outside existing production lines incl. CAPEX and OPEX estimates and risk evaluation.
  • new product scale-up from lab-scale through bench-scale to pilot-scale incl. transfer of capable process handover to full-scale production in existing or new production lines incl. evaluation of production method and process technology.
  • establishment of unit operation scale-up best practices.
  • development and implementation of new tools within product and process development and scale-up e.g., big data handling, statistics, 6 sigma/DFM/QfD, MPT and solids modelling.
  • support to UiP, Plant Engineering and Production plants with respect to equipment selection and subsequent test and evaluation.
  • participation in external technical and scientific networks and projects.

The Profile

We expect you to be relation oriented, able to communicate to various levels stakeholders, and that you, through dialogue and collaboration, can keep a continuous outlook on improvements and best practices. Of course, your analytical skills and ability to work with abstract concepts and make them concrete are distinct, and it comes equally natural to you to scope and plan projects, and to pay strong attention to deadlines, planning and organization. At the same time as keeping an eye on the planning, you are agile and flexible in redefining processes, changing structures and plans when needed. Professionally, you have a background and experiences in the following:

  • Chemical Engineer or similar with a strong experience from a production plant, incl. experience with development processes regarding how they are set up.
  • Strong knowledge and skills within production and production technology.
  • Possibly 6 Sigma Green or Black belt, but not a requirement.
  • Experience with product and production process scale-up and scale-down.
  • Experience with change management in projects and processes.
  • Fluent in Danish and English, both written and spoken.
